Winton is located near Clifford at 599 Patrick Henry Highway, Amherst, Virginia.

Architecture

Winton is a frame house with a hip roof and deep cornice with fine dentil trim.  A two-story columned front portico also has deep cornice, cube modillion and dentil work.  The interior is distinguished by fine woodwork and a graceful staircase with acanthus leaf carving.  The elegant mantle in the drawing room is said to have been carved by Hessian prisoners of war. 

Timeline of Ownership of Winton

  • Abt. 1771: Winton was built by Joseph Cabell (1732-1798).
    • Joseph moved from Zion Hill in Buckingham County to Winton in Amherst County. After selling Winton, he moved back to Buckingham County residing at Variety Shades.
  • In 1779, Winton was purchased by Samuel Meredith who married Jane Henry, sister of Patrick Henry.
