Home Site – Nelson County, Virginia

The house, which is no longer in existence, was located two miles south of Lovingston, Virginia off of Route 652.

Architecture

The 1936 WPA Report says Mountain Retreat was built prior to 1836 but the 1938 Report says it was built about 1842. It was a frame two-story house with a gable roof  and stone chimneys at each end. There was a one-story porch. The 10 room house had six-panel doors and carved mantels.

Timeline of Mountain Retreat Ownership

  • Frederick Cabell (1768-1841) gave the property to his daughter, Mary Mildred Cabell, in 1836.
    • Mary Mildred Cabell (1802-1880) was born at Struman and was the daughter of Frederick Cabell and Alice Winston and granddaughter of John Cabell.
  • Mary Mildred Cabell (1802-1880) and her husband, John Horsley (1787-1860) lived at Mountain Retreat.
