Home Site- Nelson County, Virginia

Sunnyside is located on Route 647 in Nelson County, Virginia. It is designated as part of the Norwood-Wingina Rural Historic District by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Architecture

The one and one-half story home was built in the 1790’s as a tenant home on one of the Cabell’s plantations. Several additions were added in the early twentieth century.

Timeline of Sunnyside Ownership

  • 1870- Sunnyside was the home of Margaret Baldwin Cabell and Robert L. Brown after their return from running a Female Seminary in Lynchburg Virginia for ten years.
    • Margaret (1826-1877) was the daughter of Mayo Cabell and Mary Cornelia Baldwin. Robert (1820-1849) was the son of Lucy Shands Rives and Alexander Brown.
    • Both Margaret & Robert died at Sunnyside and are buried at Union Hill, which at that time of their deaths, was the home of his eldest son, Alexander Brown.
